An independent report has discovered that Brighton is one of the worst places to live if you are a new graduate.
Coming only behind Westminster and Bath as the third worst city nationwide, Brighton was found to be almost unaffordable for the budgets available to the degree holding residents.
Information showed that almost 60 per cent of the average wage was forced to be spent on rent and utility bills, with the costs coming to around £1200 a month.
Commuter expenses also featured as one of the more expensive among all of the places studied with £80 a month being the general cost.
Price was seen to be a key factor in satisfaction, as cheaper cities to live in such as Preston, Carlisle and Bradford all placed in the top three for happiest graduates.
When comparing with a city such as Bradford, a pint of beer is 50 per cent more expensive in Brighton, with a gym membership also costing 25 per cent more.
Positive points for the city come from the fact that a thriving economy has given so many more job opportunities to new graduates, with openings being more available than in cities that ranked in the top 10, such as Stoke-On-Trent, Leicester, Carlisle and Newcastle.
This has also resulted in much higher salaries earned, although this may have been necessary when considering that rental costs to occupy a one-bedroom property near the city centre, which was more than double the price of a comparable option in Stoke, with the cost coming to an average £974 a month.
There also appears to be a common theme to the levels of satisfaction when considering a north to south divide.
This is because in the traditionally more working-class northern half of the country, all of the top 10 cities are based in the area, with an indication that the costs involved with living somewhere are often the main measuring stick.
The south houses the entire bottom 10, with the traditionally elite universities of Cambridge and Oxford both featuring at 5 and 8 respectively.
