The app is the result of a partnership between the marathon’s organisers and IT firm CGI. Using 360-degree video footage filmed along key parts of the race route, CGI has created a fully immersive VR experience. Users will be able to access the content on their mobile devices or through virtual reality headsets for a more engaging simulation.
By allowing runners to familiarize themselves with the sights and sounds of the marathon in advance, the app aims to ease sensory overload and build confidence among participants who may struggle with large crowds and loud environments.
“Many autistic people find running beneficial for their physical and mental well-being,” added Mr. Watt. “However, some feel overwhelmed by the sensory aspects of big events, leading them to avoid participation altogether. We hope this app will change that by providing a sense of familiarity and comfort before race day.”
This innovative initiative marks a significant step toward making sporting events more inclusive and accessible for all.
