In Brighton tradition, Burning the Clocks will return to mark the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year.

On 21 December, families will parade through the streets of Brighton with homemade lanterns until arriving at the beach to burn them. The festival first began in 1993 and will see locals celebrating the winter solstice in an extravagant parade through the city.

This year’s theme is ‘WILD’, so participants are urged to join the fun and mark the occasion in style with a blaze.Same Sky, a local arts charity, will be organising the event. They will also be providing lantern kits for participants to purchase and make lanterns out of paper and willow. However, visitors are very welcome to bring their own.

Every year, around 2000 people gather with their carefully crafted lanterns to celebrate this winter alternative to Christmas. The festival represents a token for the end of the year and a warm welcome to the long winter days. All faiths and religions are welcome.

It will include an enormous bonfire, fireworks and a fantastic fire show to celebrate the occasion and light up the city on the darkest day of the year.  It’s also a great opportunity to join the community in celebrating this long-lived Brighton tradition of illuminating the city with joy.

As a marker of new beginnings and a beautiful symbol of hope, it’s a lovely reminder to live in the moment, reflect on the past year and ‘burn the clocks’.

Entry to the event is free, so it relies heavily on donations to take place. Donations can be made to Same Sky’s Crowdfunder
