Hair – The Musical is returning to theatres across the UK in the New Year, including Brighton’s Theatre Royal.

Full casting has been confirmed for the eagerly anticipated 50th-anniversary UK tour of Hair – The Musical. This Grammy-award winning musical is returning in March next year, bringing hit songs such as ‘Aquarius’ and ‘Let the Sun Shine In’, and ‘Good Morning Sunshine’ for eight performances at Theatre Royal Brighton.

Leading the cast in this revolutionary musical is: Dancing on Ice’s 2018 champion Jake Quickenden as ‘Berger’, Hollyoaks’ Daisy Wood-Davis as ‘Sheila’ and X Factor 2011 finalist Marcus Collins as ‘Hud’. Cast members will be led by a fantastic creative team, including their director, Jonathan O’Boyle (Pippin, Rain Man, Aspects Of Love) and producers Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment, Joseph Houston & William Whelton for Hope Mill Theatre and Ollie Rosenblatt for Senbla.

Hair explores tribalism from the perspective of a group of politically active, long-haired hippies living in New York City fighting against enrollment in the Vietnam War. As the characters struggle to find a balance between the sexual revolution and rebelling against the war, they are faced with the decision of resisting or succumbing to the pressures of their parents and society.

The narrative is rooted in the late 1960s during the sexual revolution and the rise of hippy counterculture. Many of the songs originally written and composed by Galt MacDermot, James Rado, and Gerome Ragni became anthems of the anti-Vietnam movement.

The performances, beginning in March 2019, arrive five decades after the opening night of the musical in the West End at Shaftsbury Theatre in London. Hair in the UK surpassed expectations from Broadway, running for 1,997 performances until a collapsed roof forced the show’s closure in 1973.

The musical was awarded five stars by the Metro, declared a performance of “theatrical gold”. This year, Hair was recognised at the WhatsOnStage awards, nominated in two categories,  winning ‘Best Off-West End Production’.

Hair – The Musical will be shown at Theatre Royal Brighton from Monday 8 July until Saturday 13 July. Tickets are available from the ATG Tickets website. Hair – The Musical is suitable for 14+ and the performances contain nudity.
