According to the housing charity Shelter, the number of children sleeping either on the streets or in temporary housing, such as B&B’s or hostels, has reached a record high. It is expected that Sussex is one of the worst locations in the country to face the housing crisis.
The highest rates of homeless children in the region are found in Sussex, with Brighton & Hove topping the list. Shelter’s research revealed that there are 1,999 homeless children in the city. That’s one in every 25 children.
Brighton has seen a 74% increase in homelessness in children under 17 since 2013.
Poppy Terry, a representative from Shelter claimed that their research revealed that children are:Â “hidden away in hostels and bed and breakfasts. We hear from people about cold, damp and even rats.
“You’ve got young kids who are sharing beds with multiple family members and they’re trying to play in dirty public corridors; it is really not suitable at all.
“I think we can all agree that no child should be homeless but we’re facing a generation of kids who are growing up in the housing crisis and that’s the grim reality they’re facing”.
As Christmas approaches, Shelter have launched a nationwide campaign in an attempt to tackle the dire situation. Through donations, Shelter offer homeless families a helpline to call over the festive period which will hopefully lead them to direct help.
