A 27 year old man has been left in a critical condition following a collision with a lorry on Saturday afternoon.

The 27 cyclist was hit at the bottom of Elm Grove by a red Volvo lorry just after 1pm on Saturday. The lorry met the man at the junction leading onto Lewes Road and has left him in a life threatening state.

Police are still appealing for witnesses who can shed light on the incident, however they have charged the lorry driver with dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs.  The 47 year old man has since been released on bail ahead of further enquiries into what happened to leave the cyclist fighting for his life. The driver is now being investigated pending further questioning.

The suspicion of drugs is obviously a cause for concern for the police in Sussex, with all their recent efforts to stamp out drink driving over the summer the next step would be to look into the use of recreational drugs in Brighton.

Back in 2015 there was a huge call for the legalisation of cannabis in Brighton. A petition, backed by nearly 1,000 people in the Green Parties seat, was taken to parliament for debate over the use of of cannabis. Brighton’s bubble is notoriously liberal and the use of the drug appears to coincide with the reported philosophy of at least 1 in every 112 residents in Brighton Pavilion alone advocating personal use.

The collision on Saturday is a reminder of the dangers of drug use, and although Amsterdam is fun there is a cause for concern in Brighton that drugs might be a bigger issue than some realise.

The police have bailed the lorry driver until September, and are still investigating the incident. They are appealing for witnesses of the crash to contact 101 quoting Operation Hartfoft as soon as possible.
