With the football finally over there really is no excuse now not to head out and take in some of the local music scene. There are gigs on a fair few nights this week across the city, so pick someone you’ve never heard before and go see them – you might surprise yourself.
Monday 11th July: Bunny Wailer & The Solomonic Reggestra are the first of our top picks this week. The Jamaican singer-songwriter will be bringing his huge range of reggae hits to the seaside tonight. An original member of the group The Wailers alongside Bob Marley, the three time Grammy award winning artist will show just why he is one of the greats in reggae. Head to Concorde 2 tonight if you want to see what the fuss is about.
Tuesday 12th July: One of the biggest cult bands in America are making an appearance at Concorde 2 on Tuesday. Mudhoney have been around since 1988 and built a loyal following of dedicated fans. 9 studio albums later, the group are still touring their trademark grunge sound. For fans of Pearl Jam or Soundgarden, these would be a real treat. Also on on Tuesday are Australian group Methyl Ethel. Featured on dozens of bands of 2016 lists, the band are an interesting mix of pop and electronica for anyone looking for something a bit out there – find them at the Prince Albert.
Thursday 14th July: Canadian band Suuns are at Patterns. The rock band are known for an energetic live show and combination of different styles, from Arabic to electronica, so this one is not to be missed. Experimental and weird, get tickets all here. Their most recent album was recorded over the space of one week, and has been critically acclaimed since it’s release – see what the fuss is about.
Friday 15th July: A trio of weirdly named artists are playing in the Hope and Ruin on Friday. Evans the Death, Porridge Radio and Red Deer People are all very real band names and all very real bands. The trio are all indie rock bands, with Red Deer People stemming from Brighton this is a great chance to see some local talent alongside a more established group in the form of Evans the Death, whose third album Vanilla came out earlier this year.
Sunday 17th July: The Prince Albert is playing host to a trio of rock bands on Sunday night, the perfect way to cure those Sunday night blues. The Australian Smith Street Band are bringing their energetic live show to Brighton alongside seasoned groups Apologies, I Have None and the Woahnows. All three groups have been around for years now so the combination of the three sets should be the perfect reason to get out the house on Sunday. Get tickets here!
