Friday the 13th. If you are superstitious, those words may mean something to you. They may even make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up or cause a mini-shudder in your brain. As irrational or illogical as it may be, there are people who believe that opening an umbrella indoors will bring you bad luck. For some reason, Friday, good old Thank-God-It’s -Friday Friday, the day that is officially the start of the weekend becomes as scary as those creaking sounds you hear from your furniture in the middle of the night, all because of the number 13.

Did you know that black cats are less likely to be adopted because they’re thought to be unlucky? How can this fluff ball be unlucky?

Simple, yet effective!

However, there is a twist to this Friday the 13th, because, you see, November 13th is World Kindness Day. In fact, it was first introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement. Since then, the day has been observed in many other countries including the UK, where organizations, such as Kindness UK, have made spreading kindness their mission.

So, you could either stay at home worrying that something unlucky may happen to you or get out there and be kind to someone. It can be as easy as holding the door open for someone with a smile, or buying a coffee for a stranger. Think of your random act of kindness as a germ, but a really GOOD germ, and when you perform an act of kindness, it spreads. Let’s infect Brighton with our Kindness Germs and hope that soon everyone will be coughing up kindness (in a good way)!

Honestly, just one day out of the year for random acts of kindness seems too little. Instead, why not set yourself a challenge to do a random act of kindness each day? Perhaps you know of someone who could do with being nicer to others. Why not challenge them to a kind-off? Let us know in the comments of your random acts of kindness or if you’re struggling with ideas, check out some suggestions made by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.

Still think today is unlucky? Here is something you may enjoy.
