Two weeks of work began on Monday to improve George Street in Hove, with the hope of making it a safer and more attractive environment for residents.
The work, which includes replacing benches and planters as well as removing bollards, intends to create a consistent appearance and improve accessibility for visitors to the busy pedestrianised shopping street.
A new gate will be installed at the Blatchington Road end of the street to close it off during pedestrian-only hours. This will ensure the space is safe for families and shoppers.
Hove ward Councillor Clare Moonan said:
George Street is a vital part our local community and relied on by many residents for shops, services and of course a cup of coffee. It is great to see the work of many months about to begin, which will give the street the facelift it needs.
Situated right in the heart of Hove, George Street provides residents with many services that they would otherwise have to travel to the centre of Brighton to find. For well over a hundred years, the street has been devoted to shopping, with the last private home converted to commercial premises in 1912.
