A group of students has occupied offices on the eighth floor of the Cockcroft Building at the University of Brighton’s Moulsecoomb Campus. Their action is in response to the university’s plans to make lecturers and other staff redundant. The University of Brighton Solidarity Group posted a statement on Instagram, expressing their opposition to the job cuts.

The university has not provided any comments regarding the situation but has confirmed that the vice-chancellor’s office has been occupied. A spokesperson for the occupation, identified as Neil, stated that the action was carried out by an autonomous group supported by others. The group intends to remain in the occupied offices until their demands are met.

According to Neil, the demands of the protesters are straightforward: an end to the proposed redundancies and for the vice-chancellor to explore alternative solutions to address the financial deficit caused by mismanagement rather than cutting jobs. The occupiers are concerned that the potential job losses will have a negative impact on their studies.

Currently, the University of Brighton is in the process of consulting with staff and unions regarding plans to eliminate 110 positions. The university aims to achieve the reduction primarily through voluntary redundancy.
