On the corner of Sydney street and Trafalgar Street there used to be co-operative clothing stores, much like the independent shops that still line the famous North Laine.
If we transport ourselves around a hundred years ago to when this photograph was taken, we can see a vast arrangement of wares hung from the outside of the shops – much like they still do today.
Note the sign: ‘The Greatest Clothing Factors in the South.’
Faded remnants of the advertisement signs can still be observed on the rooftops of some of the older buildings in the North Laine.
Now contrast the above photograph, with a photo from google maps of the same area:
If one looks at the beige tops of the buildings on the left, one can still see same blocks, roughly the same pattern of windows, and from opposite the building from To Be Worn Again – one would see vintage clothes hanging outside the shops.
