How long have you lived here?

“Since September, I’m a student, (at the) University of Brighton.”

Do you like the city so far?

“I love it, it’s a really I’m from Newcastle so I’m used to grey skies, miserable weather, rain, it’s snowing up there, it snowed in June last year. It’s a breath of fresh air, the reason I came down here was because I wanted somewhere new, and now I’m down here it’s really nice. It’s dead clean and it’s colourful. Everywhere in Newcastle is grey and here there’s graffiti, there’s brightly coloured buildings, I love it.”

How have you found the night club scene?

“Nothing will ever compare to a good night out in Newcastle, because it’s 3 triple vodkas for a fiver. Coming down here I went to Shoosh my first night, and I went “I’ll have two doubles” … and it cost us £15! I nearly had a heart attack. I do like it, I just don’t find myself going out that much anymore, because I can’t really afford it!”

Do you believe Brighton has its own micro-climate?

“A lot of my house mates are from down here, they’re always like “ooh it’s freezing cold” … you don’t know what cold is, get the heating off, get a jumper on!”

What do you think of the people here?

“They’re nice people here, it’s very left wing, and on my course we’ve got quite a few people who are very right wing … they all thing they’re edgy and quirky, they’re creating a stir because they’ve come to Brighton and they’re right wing.”

“A lot of people, they won’t just sit and listen, they have to argue and argue and shout and scream and hurl insults and that’s not the way to hold a politics debate. I watch a lot of right wing videos online, just to get that perspective. We’re here for a Labour society meeting, we’re part of the committee so that’s why we’re here.”
