The man accused of throwing acid in the face of a medical student has entered a guilty plea to the charges against him in Crown Court.
Milad Rouf, 25, through the dangerous substance over Dr Rym Alaoui while she stood on the doorstep of her Brighton home on May 20th at 4.20pm.
The resulting incident has left the victim with what is described as ‘life-changing injuries’.
She was rushed to the Royal Sussex Hospital, the hospital she works in, and was treated by staff for the injuries sustained to her arms and chest as they raced to save as much of the affected skin as possible.
Rouf was apprehended following an investigation in which a full-scale hunt began, with images and information describing a man in a mask who they requested to speak to following the attack.
After further enquiry, he was arrested and later charged with grievous bodily harm and intent to main, disfigure or disable as a result of his actions.
Dr Alaoui was known to the defendant as they had previously trained together when they both attended Cardiff University to study Medicine.
In Monday’s trial, Milad Rouf appeared before Judge Christine Laing QC at Lewes Crown Court, where he muttered a simple ‘guilty’ plea to the charge of throwing the sulphuric acid.
His demeanour was said to be solemn and still with little reaction as the charges were read out.
Judge Laing made note in her statement that this offence was of an ‘extreme nature’, and given this circumstance all options have to be considered with the dangerousness of the offence said to be a significant question of how to decide on the level of punishment enforced.
As part of this case, there had been a full psychiatric report ordered and completed which would be available when sentencing was decided.
