Thirty-four new homes will be built in Buckingham Road, central Brighton, having been approved by Brighton & Hove’s planning committee yesterday (15 August).
Brighton is consistently regarded as being one of the least affordable UK Cities for housing.
This new development will see 44% affordable housing provision on the site, which is more than the local planning requirement.
Former Victorian townhouses at 76-79 Buckingham Road will be converted into 14 affordable homes, that will be all be available for low cost rent or shared ownership.
The homes at 76-79 Buckingham Road will include 12 affordable two bedroom and 2 affordable one bedroom homes, with access to private rear gardens for the ground-floor flats.
Twenty homes all with balconies will be built in a five-storey building at 80 Buckingham Road – a 1970s building that was previously used by the council until 2015, and will now be partially demolished.
Of these twenty new homes at 80 Buckingham Road, there will be five one bedroom, 14 two bedroom and one three bedroom flats, with a shared courtyard.
Additionally two of the properties will be suitable for wheelchair users.
Councillor Julie Cattell, chair of the city’s planning committee, speaking about this news said:
“This is a good use of a site to provide new quality homes for people in the city. The redesign of 80 Buckingham Road will create a modern, well-designed building that fits well with the traditional Victorian townhouses and surrounding area.”
The development also includes 64square metres of community space with a ‘shop window’ frontage onto the junction of Buckingham Street and Upper Gloucester Road.
Developers are contributing more than £97,000 for open space in the area, and also nearly £30,000 for secondary education and £16,500 for sustainable transport.
