Residents are invited to nominate outstanding individuals for the Freedom of the City Award, which is one of the highest civic honours that Brighton & Hove City Council can bestow.
The award recognises exceptional service or achievement that has made a significant impact on the city and its people.
Nominations are now open and must be submitted by Sunday 19 July 2026.
Exceptional individuals
During the last round of resident nominations, councillors agreed to award the title of Honorary Freewoman of the City to Emily Kenward and Honorary Freeman of the City to Mesfin Abraham Ghebre-Ghiorghis.
Emily Kenward has transformed the lives of thousands of older people experiencing loneliness and isolation.
Since establishing Time to Talk Befriending in 2013, Emily and her team of staff and volunteers have supported more than 3,500 people across Brighton, Hove, Adur and Worthing, offering befriending, access to regular social events and vital emotional support.
Mesfin Abraham Ghebre-Ghiorghis, known to many as Abraham, served Brighton & Hove for 37 years as a council officer and is celebrated for his unwavering commitment to race equality and local democracy.
In the last years, the city has also honoured the achievements and legacy of the Albion Football Club and Mary Clarke, a trailblazing suffragette with ties to Brighton & Hove.
Celebrate those who go above and beyond
Councillor Bella Sankey, Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “The Freedom of the City Award is one of the highest civic honours and a meaningful opportunity to show our appreciation to individuals who have dedicated their time, efforts and extraordinary skills to make our city a better place and improve the lives of its residents.
“We want to hear from residents about the people who inspire them and the unsung heroes who make a real difference.”
Group leaders will review the nominations and make recommendations to a special Full Council meeting scheduled in November 2026, where the final decision will be made.
