With such a wide spectrum of outlets, boutiques and bazaars in the city of Brighton and Hove, it can be overwhelming — even as a resident. So when the historic Open Market reopened after major redevelopments in 2014, it offered the people of Brighton a new one stop shop in which to peruse to their heart’s content.
Having begun in the 1880s, the Oxford Street fruit and vegetable site moved to the current location on Marshall’s Row in 1926. This site expanded in 1938 and 1960 and initially thrived until a decline in business in the 1970s. But, after the redevelopment process begun in 2006, the current set-up is more sustainable and active than ever and is now arguably symbolic of what Brighton can offer the contemporary consumer.
Indeed, the Open Market represents near enough every aspect of Brighton’s eclecticism with a plethora of uniquely enticing stores. Whether you are in the hunt for fresh fruits and vegetables from a friendly greengrocer, the best cuts from local butchers or a snazzy new outfit for a show off at one of the city’s many clubs and pubs then the Open Market has you covered.
Despite its broad appeal, the Open Market can be rather tricky to find. Situated in a closed-roof space just across from The Level, it has entrances on London Road and Ditchling Road. But the niche which the Open Market has managed to carve for itself is refreshing to say the least; with London Road awash with nationwide brands, this bustling hidden gem of Brighton is something of a sanctuary from the competing supermarkets and chain coffee shops.
With two levels, there’s plenty on offer and with over 50 traders to choose from, the Open Market has tapped into the notion that Brighton is somewhere for everyone. The standalone traders ensure that the products are fresh — in every sense of the word. Made from scratch and with nothing to hide, these established traders provide an intriguing and exclusive alternative to the humdrum of the high street.
