Yesterday saw what could be the first of many protests against the poor running and ongoing cancellations and delays of Southern Rail and Thameslink services.
The protesters had been angered by under-staffed train services which led to cancellations and delays, however there was also a great deal of dismay at the lack of wheelchair access and aid for disabled passengers on Southern trains.
To add insult to injury, many protesters were even late for the 6:30pm start time due to train delays on Southern train lines. Moreover, the demonstration was repeatedly disrupted by PA announcements regarding further cancellations and delays, resulting in chants of “What a load of rubbish!” and “You don’t know what you’re doing!”
The demonstration appeared to have been around 50 or 60 people, however more people came and went as it progressed.
The official Twitter account of the protests retweeted content which suggested that despite a large gathering, there was no management presence to be seen.
Moreover, Southern Railway tweeted this morning that RMT Union had planned legitimate striking action on the 21st June, which should highlight the extent of the chaotic service.
