Brighton’s Real Junk Food Project is offering you the chance to ‘pay what you feel’ for a haul of food which would otherwise have been thrown away.
The project intercepts ‘waste’ food from supermarkets, shops and wholesalers, normally cooking it up and serving it at its ‘pay what you feel’ cafes across Brighton.
After taking two days off over the Christmas period, the project has been left with a large amount of food which is now available for the public to collect at a cost which suits them.
The food is available today and tomorrow from St. Luke’s Church near Seven Dials, 64 Shoreham Road.
The Real Junk Food Project say that their pay as you feel pricing “may well lead to some people taking the mickey” but hope that they will “encourage people to think about what they eat and value it”.
A spokesperson for the project said: “All of the money we make from serving food goes back into running the project. We pay rent, we buy petrol, we have vehicles to maintain and many more costs to account for.”
The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization estimates that 1.3 billion tonnes of usable food is wasted every year, the majority of which is not composted.
The Real Junk Food Project has been trying to reduce the amount of food waste in Brighton since February 2015.
