Following our piece on the new pop-up art gallery and maker space ‘LAB’, which is working with local artists to bring an array of exhibitions over the next 3 months that highlight the extraordinary creativity of our city and the lovely people in it, we spoke with Ashleigh at Pop-Up Brighton about what’s in store at the exciting new seafront space over the Halloween period.
“I’ve been running Pop-Up Brighton for 6 years now and have never done a show for Halloween before. We’ve had a really high amount of submissions which proves this is a popular topic for a show and I will be doing a show like this again. From over 60 submissions we have narrowed it down to 10 artists, the quality is really high, from large paintings to paper cut illustrations to textile human anatomy. This exhibition opens on Thursday night and then will run alongside our other unique creative Halloween shows.”
“Saturday day and night will be a VR horror experience ran by GoVR, open all day and in the evening having a VR horror party, I’ve seen the demos of some of the games and they truly terrifying! Sunday will be Brighton Film Club – Horror; 15 short horror films from around the world, I’ve search far and wide for these films and I can say that they are a great mixture of stunning art house film, comedy, films that make you wince and ones that are really terrifying.”
“This week sees our forth show in the gallery, the shows we’ve had have been a real mixture of events. ‘Bring Your Own Beamer’ which was outside in between the new golden circle made from the old West Pier columns. Videos artists lit up the space creating a digital wonderland, as always I am blown away with what digital artists can do. Last week we had a show exhibiting 50 artists from around the world making artwork on skateboards. We have a some great exhibitions coming up too; next week is ‘Next Hype’ where illustrators have drawn their favourite grime artists, then ‘Shrines’ some of favourite no-brow artists putting on a group show of 2D works with a 3D shrine to accompany it. Then it’s our Pink Season focusing on LGBTQ+ artists and performances (call for submissions for this show are still open at popupbrighton.com/submit ).”
“Having a semi permanent space again really brings Pop-Up Brighton back to the essence of helping as many artists as possible by doing as many different projects as possible. The fact that its right on the beach is just incredible, what is normally a stressful job seems very calm when you get to just look out to sea.”
