Tanushka Marah will stand against Hove Labour MP Peter Kyle in the next general election and prioritise calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Tanushka Marah’s election campaign will oppose institutionalised racism and support a fully public health service, improved youth services, and rent controls to combat the housing crisis.

A hustings on March 17, attended by voters from Brighton, Hove, and Portslade, and fellow hustings candidate Jasmine Reeve, selected Tanushka Marah as the independent candidate.

Tanushka Marah, selected candidate, said: “There is a feeling in Brighton and Hove, especially since the war in Gaza began, that the people’s concerns are not being met, especially by Peter Kyle.

“Peter Kyle not standing for a ceasefire for a long time has upset people; they feel their voices are not getting heard. I am here to voice that; that’s why I am standing. I want to voice what people are saying, thinking, and feeling that is getting ignored.”

The environment and climate emergency will also be one of Tanushka Marah’s priorities in her campaign.

Tanushka Marah, said: “Labour has gone back on everything they have promised, such as anti-austerity. I am here to say this is needed more than ever now; it has to be on the table, and they have to be held accountable. They are just chasing Tory votes, it seems.

“The real reason I’m here is: who do people have to vote for? One woman came to the organising group yesterday and said, ‘I have no one to vote for this time; I’ve always voted Labour’. I campaigned for Labour in the last election.”

Tanushka Marah has participated in pro-Palestine protests and founded the campaign group Artist Action Brighton, which organises local theatrical pro-Palestine demonstrations.

Jasmine Reeve, said: “Having Tanushka elected as an MP would make a real difference to this community. Together, we will now work towards our goal of collective liberation from state violence and through new ways of organising, centred around care and sustainability.”

Over 140 people attended the hustings, and attendees donated over £600 towards election campaign costs.
