It’s Tuesday and that can only mean one thing, our charity Tuesday feature! This week we’re focusing on Brighton Peace and Environment Centre, an educational charity who provide the public with information about local and global concerns. They started in 1982 after a group of concerned locals involved in the CND and The Quakers set up their own shop called Give Peace a Chance in Kensington Gardens. In 1984 they renamed themselves The Brighton Peace Centre and incorporated a library and resource area. During the late eighties they expanded their interests to human rights, fair trade, social justice, environmental protection and sustainable development. They became the Brighton Peace and Environment Centre in the nineties when they moved to Gardner Street.
The Brighton Peace and Environment Centre work with teachers to promote creative and critical thinking, putting on courses and workshops about social, political and environmental forces that shape the world we live in. They even have their own library containing books on a range of topics from nuclear power to human rights. They also have a children’s section and resource boxes for schools containing a number of educational aids. The charity run several outreach programmes including Global Citizen Advocate courses for teachers, a 3rd Age project for the older residents of Brighton and Hove and an after school club called Go Green, for the younger residents.
Next week is Time to Act Week and with the help of the Brighton Peace and Environment Centre, there are many workshops, film screenings, public meetings and conferences about climate change. From the film ‘This Changes Everything’ inspired by a book by writer Naomi Klein, Hanover Action for Sustainable Living present a film that poses the question ‘What if confronting the issue of climate change is the best hope we have for building a better world?’ to a talk called ‘No Future? A Buddhist Punk view on Climate Chaos which is worth going to just to tell people you went to a talk by a Buddhist punk. To find out more about the events going on next week pop here.
