The Real Junk Food Project is a charity scheme run all over the world with a mission to abolish surplus food through a variety of Pay As You Feel concepts. They work with international and local partners to intercept food destined for landfill and redistribute it through their network. There is a common misconception of food waste that it’s mouldy, inedible or rubbish but that simply is not true. 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year and if food waste was a country it would be the third largest producer of carbon dioxide behind the US and China.

Just one quarter of all wasted food could feed the 795 million under nourished people around the world which is why this project is so important. In the UK alone there are an estimated 2 million people who are in hunger whilst the country creates 15 million tonnes of food waste every year. The Real Junk Project have the goal of creating a solution, they want to use the food that was previously thought of as surplus and rubbish to feed people. So they basically take the stuff that’s just out of date or going to be thrown away anyway and turn it into delicious meals which you can pay as much or as little as you want for.

The concept behind their payment scheme ‘encourages people to think about that plate of food means to them, and salute it in what way they can’. Their website elaborates ‘By choosing not to segregate people based on financial circumstances we are able to not only fund the project, but do so in a way that does not patronise those who need it and those who support it.’

Not only do they run cafes and share spaces they offer 3-course dinners and meals for office parties, birthdays, weddings, wakes, Christmas parties, launch parties…you name it and they’ll cater. If you want to volunteer for them find out how here and if you’d like to see their incredible project for yourself and try the food, you can catch them at One Church, Gloucester Place on Fridays from 1pm and Hollingdean Community Centre on Thursdays from 12:30pm. The Real Junk Food Project is needed in our world that seemingly runs on a ‘more more more’ mentality and with the Brighton branch run by some truly wonderful members of our community, get involved!
