Restaurant Review: The Regency

If you’re still reminiscing about how lovely this weekend was (no rain on Sunday and an extra hour’s sleep!) then tuck into this review of one of Brighton’s best loved seafood restaurants to plan your next weekend outing.

The Regency Restaurant is situated directly opposite the seafront, offering picturesque views of the ocean, the West Pier and the i360. Converted into a restaurant in the early 1930’s, it remains the oldest and one of the most popular seafront restaurants in Brighton.

The restaurant is a Grade II listed building and was originally built as the palatial seaside home by Thomas Coutts, the founder of Coutts Bank in the early part of the 18th century, so that his wife could eat her favourite dish of King Prawns looking out at the sea (if that’s not love, I don’t know what is). When Mr Coutts died, leaving his wife Harried the richest woman in Europe, she remarried the Duke of St Albans and they lived at the house throwing lavish parties by the seaside. It was turned into a restaurant in 1930 and still looks untouched from its classic 30’s interior, with the red and cream tiled colour scheme and old-fashion chandelier offering an eclectic taste of the past.

The cosy and laid-back atmosphere makes it perfect for leisurely lunches and relaxed evening meals and it’s been a firm family favourite of ours over the years. Before I even lived in Brighton, we used to come to The Regency and I’ve got fond memories of tucking into a banana split when I was seven years old, seated outside and watching the waves rolling in. No banana splits were eaten on our return on Sunday yet The Regency still remains at it’s top spot, and we were seated right by the window to enjoy our meal whilst taking in the views of the sunset.

The restaurant boasts an array of locally-caught, delicious fresh fish which also isn’t extortionately priced, and we all tucked into a classic haddock and chips in true seaside style. Offering a reasonably extensive wine list, the white wine we chose was the perfect addition to complement the fish.

Portion sizes are hefty, the service is always welcoming and with the autumn sunshine beaming through the windows, The Regency was the perfect lunchtime spot for a late Sunday afternoon.

Come rain or shine, The Regency will always be a favourite and one you can always rely on for a delicious and relaxing meal out with friends, family and loved ones. The restaurant is located at 131 Kings Rd, almost directly opposite the i360 so you’re sure not to miss it.
