5 stars

The Robin Hood pantomime at Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre delivers a barrel of laughs and plenty of festive cheer. From start to finish, it’s a non-stop romp that keeps the whole family entertained with quirky characters, dazzling musical numbers and classic panto silliness.

Every panto needs a baddie and Darren Clewlow-Smith absolutely leans into the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham, smirking his way through the show. He laps up every boo and hiss, giving the audience exactly what they want, a villain to heckle.

Meanwhile, the irrepressible Dame Delia, played by Paul Giddings, keeps things cheeky with outrageous costumes, daft gags and plenty of knowing nods to the adults.

In the role of Robin Hood, Nigel Clarke (CBeebies star) is the perfect hero, confident, likeable and always ready with a song. His easy-going charm makes him a natural fit for the role. Alongside him, Janine Pardo’s Maid Marian is no shrinking violet. She’s bold and has a beautiful voice.

Darryl Carrington adds to the fun as Will Scarlet, keeping the energy up with juggling tricks and moments of audience participation. One of the standout performances comes from Katie Pritchard as Alana. She’s a whirlwind of enthusiasm, zipping around the stage with musical instruments in tow and landing every punchline. Her Gen Z slang bit was a particular crowd-pleaser.

The music choices give this panto a fresh twist. You wouldn’t expect to hear songs from Muse or Queen in Sherwood Forest but they work brilliantly. The dancers add to the spectacle with energetic routines. There’s even an aerial hoop act and a fire performer to keep things exciting.

When the final moments arrive with a shower of fake snow and streamers, the joy on the audience’s faces says it all. It’s pure, feel-good panto magic.
