Dr Jonathan Iliff’s Science of Dreams talk at the Brighthelm Centre in Brighton was a brilliant exploration of what’s really going on in our heads when we drift off. As both a psychiatrist and neuroscientist, Jonathan had plenty of knowledge to share but he kept it all easy to follow and surprisingly funny.

The big questions came out straight away: why do we dream, what’s happening in our brains, and can we actually influence those weird little movies playing out as we sleep? Jonathan tackled it all with a mix of sharp science and relatable anecdotes, throwing in just the right amount of cheeky humour to keep the energy up. His passion for the subject was clear and contagious.

One of the standout moments was his explanation of what different parts of the brain get up to during sleep. Hearing about how our brains dream up such detailed and realistic dream worlds was fascinating.

This was very far from a dry science lecture. Dr Iliff balanced the nitty-gritty of REM cycles and limbic systems with practical bits like how to try lucid dreaming. The talk stayed fun, engaging and accessible, even when dipping into the more complex stuff.

The Q&A at the end let the audience dig even deeper and Dr Iliff was ready with thoughtful responses to every question. If anything, the event was over far too quickly. An extra hour wouldn’t have gone amiss.

The Science of Dreams talk left you thinking differently about your dreams and the wild, creative mind behind them. An informative, engaging and fun talk.
