From tomorrow (8th of June), until Sunday (16th June) Love To Ride Brighton and Cycling UK are asking residents hop on their bikes and share their cycling experiences with the #7DaysofCycling hashtag for Bike Week.
People who commute to work on two wheels are shown to be “happier, healthier, wealthier and more productive”. The physical and mental health benefits of cycling are shown in Sustrans survey, which found that ‘cycling halves the number of sick days taken by staff‘. As well as having health benefits, commuting on two wheels can also reduce the cost of travel and lower levels of pollution.
The theme #7DaysofCycliing aims to encourage everyone to try and ride seven times during Bike Week and share their cycling experience, to celebrate
- Enjoying the social side of cycling
- Cycling to school and engaging children in cycling
- The mental health benefits of cycling
- Businesses boosting their cycle-friendliness
- Favourite three-miles – best short routes by bike
- Getting fit and healthy through cycling
- Travelling from A-B by bike
The benefits of biking in Brighton are recognised by employers, with many workplaces, including Brighton & Hove City Council, involved in the Cycle To Work Scheme, which allows employees to borrow up to £3000, both tax and national insurance free, to invest in a bike.
Whether you cycle daily or haven’t been on a bike in years, everyone is invited to join in with Bike Week. You can register for free here, to record your profile and be in with the chance of winning some prizes.
Love to Ride is all about getting more people on bikes. They ask residents to “Check out our Resources page for lots of useful content to copy, paste and share – helping others to discover the joys and benefits of cycling is as simple as a few clicks of your mouse…”
