Saltdean Lido is in desperate need of Brighton people’s help: they’re falling short of their £100,000 pledge target. Whilst the pool itself has been successfully restored, the surrounding buildings are still looking for a little love to bring them back to their former glory.
As we reported in April, the Saltdean Lido CIC (Community Interest Company) have pledged to raise £100,00, which will in turn demonstrate the support of local residents and businesses. If they are successful in proving this support, the chances of receiving the £4.2 million that the CIC are working with the Heritage Lottery Fund to secure, will be drastically increased. They have also worked with Brighton and Hove City Council in order to secure a £700,00 donation.
However despite the potential for this enormous funding from the lottery and the council, the Lido’s crowdfunding page is so far falling short, despite it having active since March. With only 45 days left to secure the £100,00, they have only secured 35% of this target. Failure to reach this amount could very easily lose the Lido the financial backing that it desperately requires.
According to the Saltdean Lido webite, the buildings that the CIC are hoping to restore if the crowdfunding is successful will be transformed ‘into a leisure facility, community hub and tourist destination of which Saltdean can once again be proud.’ The cafe will provide visitors with food and refreshments, and will assist in turning the Lido into a destination once again. Also, the presence of a cafe and leisure facility will drastically increase the Lido’s profits, meaning that it can remain open for future generations to enjoy.
It would truly be a tragedy to allow one of the UK’s finest remaining modernist Lido’s to disappear again, so they desperately need the support of Saltdean, and the local area’s residents. If we all just share a little they will reach their target in no time, and we can retain this wonderful part of the south coast’s history.
