After over a year being trapped inside their homes without the ability to attain many amenities, lockdown lifting has provided the hope that finally the public could actually see their lives return to a near normality.

However, with zero deaths being reported and the country being in the midst of slowly recovering, there is debate on whether this is necessity or SAGE simply causing unnecessary panic.

Reports from the government have stated that three quarters of the adult population are set to have received their first vaccine, yet advice from scientists continues to insist that there is a new third wave coming that could yet again take effect within society.

News from Downing Street also confirms that the Prime Minister also does not see any reason for the date to be delayed, with June 21st still believed to be the end of restrictions nationally.

While they are obviously the leading experts in the field, the scientists who are at the forefront of Covid-19 are also not actively involved in PR, and therefore may not grasp the panic that such announcements will cause to the public, especially when the messages from both them and the government do not align and only serve to confuse the public’s understanding.

There is also an economic aspect to this problem, with the business and economic factors of the lockdown situation needing to be key considerations, especially considering the fact that the furlough scheme will soon end, with both businesses and workers needing to have financial support either from the public or from government intervention.

However, scientists still do make claims that even a few weeks of delay, would actually allow some significant relief in terms of making the national situation much more sustainable and avoid going back into any more restrictions.

With the Indian variant and the apparent vulnerability, there is obviously some small issues, however there needs to be better conversations and a more united front that avoids unnecessary panic for the British public.
