St Catherine’s hospice has raised in excess of £170,000 since the launch of their Heart Trail in Sussex and Surrey. It was widely supported and has helped raise awareness of the valuable work the charity undertakes as well raise as much needed funds.

Local artists kindly created over 40 stunning hearts for the Heart Trail and these were individually sponsored by businesses and entrepreneurs. Using the Heart Trail app, walkers and hikers were able to unlock the location of each of the hearts and follow the trail all the way to Heart Rock.
The hearts were all auctioned in October to raise further funds for St Catherine’s Hospice. The Brighton-born, Sussex entrepreneur Steve Barrey (A.K.A ‘The Liquorice Dragon’) bought three hearts on the night and is keen to see that they continue to have a positive impact in their new homes.
The ‘First Sight’ heart was sponsored and bought jointly by Steve and Peter James, best-selling crime novelist who based his Roy Grace book series in and around Brighton and Hove.
It’s this strong connection to Brighton that has influenced Steve’s decision to place this special heart in the Brighton’s Jubilee Library where readers can enjoy many of Peter James’ books.

The second heart, entitled ‘Sending Love’ will remain at Steve’s family home. The heart was designed by artist Laura Ford and depicts written words of love from family and friends.
The third heart, ‘Sunny Sussex’, by Sussex artist Sue Collins is currently homeless. Steve has recently been on Radio Sussex with Allison Ferns asking listeners for their help to decide where it should be located. ‘Sunny Sussex’ reflects the beauty of the Sussex countryside; its bright colours are used to symbolise hope during difficult, darker times. Steve has already been offered some fantastic suggestions.
The three hearts are located to inspire a love of reading, a love of family and the third will be located somewhere to inspire hope and happiness.
