Just like with fashion, Summer beauty trends come and go. But regardless of what’s in trend or not when it comes to makeup and hair, Summer is about being practical. And as with clothes, the seasons changing usually means a revamped beauty collection. After all, you wouldn’t keep wearing knits and knee high boots in Summer would you? So we’re here to offer you our top Summer beauty essentials to keep you looking fresh throughout this current heatwave.
1. Moisturiser
Just because it’s Summer, doesn’t mean that moisturising should come to an end. Unfortunately dry and dehydrated skin doesn’t care what season it is, so be sure to get an appropriate Summer moisturiser. For this time of the year you’ll want a lighter moisturiser than you might opt for in Winter. As someone with normal/oily skin I always opt for water based moisturisers to avoid excess shine throughout the day.
2. BB Cream
Beauty balms and colour correctors will be your best friends this Summer. As with moisturiser, hotter weather calls for lighter face products. A full coverage foundation may make you look flawless but does it matter when it’s slipping all over your face due to sweat? When looking for a BB or CC cream, cater for your individual skin type. If you have dry skin, look for one with a little more hydration. If you have oily skin perhaps there’s a mattifying one out there for you. Ideally for Summer you’ll want one with some SPF in as keeping your skin protected is key! If you’re perfectly happy with your foundation and don’t fancy splashing the cash on a new product, why not mix a pump of foundation with some of your favourite moisturiser to act as a tinted moisturiser?
3. Waterproof Mascara
When it comes to makeup, mascara is one thing people usually say they couldn’t live without. In Summer however, mascara can just become another hassle, another thing to worry about smudging when you get a little hot and bothered. To avoid any under eye smudging, opt for a waterproof mascara! This is definitely a Summer essential, meaning you can even go swimming without worrying about panda eyes. Bonus: Waterproof mascara holds curl in your lashes for longer!
4. Lip Balm
Keeping our skin hydrated means keeping our lips hydrated too. As much as cold air dries out your lips in Winter, the sun can be equally damaging. After all, there’s nothing like chapped lips and no lip balm to ruin your mood. If possible, aim for a balm with SPF in to protect from sun damage.
5. Waterproof Eyeliner
If, like me, you can’t live without your winged eyeliner even in Summer, then this is a must have. Just like with mascara, liner can have the tendency to slip and slide throughout the day. For those of you with hay fever, this will be a godsend – no matter how much your eye waters, waterproof liner just won’t budge. Plus it means your liner can be “on fleek” even when you’re splashing about in the pool!
6. Lip Gloss
What says Summer more than glowy skin and a glossy lip, am I right ladies? Avoid heavy liquid lips during Summer days and go for an effortless shine instead. Lip gloss is a great thing to throw in your bag, as it can be applied on the go. Although if you live in Brighton beware of hair sticking to lips syndrome… (It’s windy here).
7. Sea Salt Spray
When it comes to hair, I’m about as low maintenance as it comes during the hotter months. Who has the time or patience to use a hot tool when you’re already overheating? For an effortless look, pick up some for sea salt spray, or even make your own! Spray on damp or dry hair for a just-hit-the-beach look.
8. Makeup Setting Spray
If you really don’t want to overhaul your makeup bag just for Summer, a setting spray is a great investment. Depending on the one you get, your makeup could stay in place for up to 24h – that’s pretty impressive. This is an essential for late night Summer parties or for going poolside. Let’s see boys make that “take her swimming joke” now…
9. Hydrating/Cooling Mist
A hydrating mist is a great thing to throw in your bag on a hot day. If you feel yourself getting a bit warm, simply spray a few spritzes and you’ll feel good as new (well, almost). If you don’t fancy paying out of pocket for a somewhat novelty product such as this, why not try your hand at making your own? Or just refill a spray bottle with rose water for a similarly refreshing effect.
10. Suncream, Suncream, Suncream!
This list wouldn’t be complete without including the most important beauty essential of all… Suncream. If you want to be the fairest of them all this Summer, make sure to top up on suncream regularly to prevent burning or premature ageing. A good tan is nice, but is it worth the future wrinkles?
