Next month, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas will be a guest presenter at ‘Vote 100: Celebrating Women Composers’, an evening of music held to commemorate the centenary of women gaining the vote through democracy in action.
Including work from Lucy Pankhurst, a relative of Emmeline Pankhurst herself, the evening will feature work from a diverse range of female composers spanning through the years. This includes a premiere of a recently discovered piece by Viennese-born composer, Alma Mahler as well as a trio written by Welsh composer Morfydd Owen in 1915.
Along with the above, music from 16 other extraordinary female composers will be played during the course of the evening, including work from Tracey Chapman and Dame Ethel Smyth, with vocals provided by Polina Shepherd, Rozanna Madylus and others.
There will also be some special appearances from the likes of TableMusic, vocal/instrumental group HEARD Collective – Daisy Chute and Cerian, choir ‘Women of Note’, guitarist Brian Ashworth plus multi-pianist ensemble the Zongora Piano Group.
The event has been orchestrated by the Music Of Our Time Charity, as part of UK Parliament Week 2018, which is an annual festival encouraging people from across the country to get involved with Parliament. The festival also encourages us to explore how democracy has shaped the country we know today, including women first achieving the vote in 1918, which is undeniably one of the most important examples of democracy in action in modern history.
Vote 100: Celebrating Women Composers will take place on Saturday 17th November, 7.30 – 10pm at St. Georges Church, BN2 1ED, with tickets from £5 – £18. For more information and tickets, please see the website.
