Stand for Ukraine Brighton and Hove (SFUBH) held a candle-lit vigil and protested in Brighton on Saturday to show solidarity with Ukraine.
SFUBH protested outside of Brighton Palace Pier and then participated in a procession to the Angel of Peace statue, in which a candle-lighting ceremony took place.
SFUBH protested to mark two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the tenth anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine.
Kira Makohon, SFUBH chairperson, said: “Our biggest wish is that there will be no wars in the world, so by protesting, we raise awareness of the horrors of war and its global consequences.
“We want to remind people that the war is not over and is taking more and more lives. We want to say that if Russia wins, it will be the end of international law as we know it.”
SFUBH organised a candle-lit vigil to commemorate those who have lost their lives, homes, and loved ones or have been injured or captured during the Russia-Ukraine war.
Violetta Korbina, SFUBH protester, said: “I had no hesitation as to whether to join the protest or not. I cannot imagine a different way of spending that day.
“Being privileged to live abroad, it is my direct responsibility to shout and yell and scream about the horrors happening at home.”
SFUBH believe that the solution to this conflict must involve Ukraine restoring its internationally recognised territory and rebuilding the land with solid security guarantees.
Kira Makohon, said: “Protests like this help a lot. First of all, they show the people of Ukraine that they are not forgotten, that we support them as much as we can, and that we work to share the truth about the reality of the Ukrainian war.
“Protests remind the public that the war is going on and the people of Ukraine are fighting for their freedom against a cruel and pitiless powerful regime whose aim is to destroy Ukraine completely.”
SFUBH held three protests and nine large-scale cultural events and participated in ten local events and fairs in 2023.
