It’s not every day that you see a horse on Brighton beach, but yesterday three handlers took the star of award-winning play War Horse for a canter by the pier.

Life-sized horse puppet Joey enjoyed the Brighton sunshine as part of the show’s launch in the city. He attended a photo call near the pier at 9.30am, and later appeared at The Brighton Centre, getting up close and personal with a few special guests.

After a nine-year stint in London, first at the National Theatre and then in the West End, the much-loved tale will be showing at The Brighton Centre next year.

Set in World War One, the heart-wrenching drama based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel follows a boy and his horse through years of turmoil. It features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping horses to life on stage.

The production has now been seen by more than seven million people from all parts of the world, including Australia, Canada, Germany, and China. It was also adapted into a 2011 film of the same title, directed by Spielberg and starring Tom Hiddleston.

The author is overjoyed that War Horse is touring the UK. He said: “I am so pleased this is happening; that so many more people will have the chance to enjoy this unique theatrical event. Steady boy, steady Joey. Trot on!”
