A new target to move half a million people into jobs by the end of June launched this month, under ambitious UK Government plans for the national recovery from Covid-19.

As we move out of the pandemic, with restrictions lifted and life returning to normal, the ‘Way to Work’ campaign will focus on getting job-ready people off Universal Credit and into work, rapidly filling vacancies which are at a record high.

Zara Manley Manager at Brighton Jobcentre acknowledged this “Our dedicated Work Coaches in Brighton Jobcentre are working flat out to help people get back into work, as we bounce back from the pandemic.

“We want people to know we’re there for them, and that we’re working with local employers to identify and help fill their vacancies in all sectors, but especially key industries. “The good thing is, is that there are jobs out there, and the latest figures show the number of online job adverts in the region have risen by 8.7% since Covid-19.”

Kickstart due to end at the end of March

With Kickstart coming to an end there are still plenty of support and opportunities for young people to participate. I would therefore encourage any young person claiming Universal Credit to contact their work coach to discuss these opportunities.

Allan Hancock, Employment Adviser Manager has said

The Brighton Jobcentre hosted a jobsfair last Tuesday to support local businesses with their urgent recruitment needs, brands such as G4S, WHSmith and Falcon Green held interviews for their vacancies and most managed to hire on the day. Inviting companies to hold interviews is such a productive way to get vacancies filled and people into much needed work.

We are hosting the next event on the 23rd March 2022 pop into your job centre if you need assistance and we can see how we can best help.”

We have also received the following statements from a minister:

Minister for Welfare Delivery David Rutley said: “The best route out of poverty is through work, and we’re ramping up support to help Universal Credit claimants to secure jobs as soon as possible through our new Way to Work scheme. Once in employment, they’ll join the nearly two million working claimants already seeing an extra £1,000 per year on average in their pockets thanks to recent changes we made so people keep more of what they earn. The most vulnerable continue to benefit from our £500m Household Support Fund towards the cost of essentials like food and energy this winter.”

The Statistics – The employment situation is looking a lot better than envisaged with a 39% decrease in the number of 18-24 on jobseeker benefits.

As of 13th January 2022, there are currently 25,442 customers of all ages claiming Universal Credit.
