The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Brighton and Hove from 9pm Wednesday 17th January until 1pm Thursday 18th January.

Extremely strong winds will affect parts of the UK during Wednesday night and Thursday morning. It is anticipated that the strongest winds will travel eastwards across the area in which the warning is issued, before clearing by early afternoon.

It is warned that injuries from flying debris are possible, along with damage to buildings. In addition, some western coasts may be affected by large waves that may throw out ocean debris onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

The BBC have warned that road, rail and ferry services may be affected, with expected delays to journeys and cancellations. It is also warned that some bridges might also also close. It’s possible that power cuts will occur, potentially impacting other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

The Met Office define the yellow weather warning as a threat of severe weather possible over the next few days that might affect ordinary people. People are advised to plan ahead and consider potential travel delays or change to everyday activities. The yellow warning is generally to mean you should keep an eye on the latest forecast, and be aware that the weather may change or worsen in the next few days.

Brighton Council’s severe weather shelter for rough sleepers will be open tonight (Tuesday 16 January) in response to predicted the cold weather. The shelter is open to all homeless people. The severe weather shelter is run by Brighton Housing Trust (BHT), who work with our street outreach service run by St Mungo’s. St Mungo’s will be working with other local organisations to inform rough sleepers about the shelters and to assist BHT in co-ordinating shelter places. There’s more information on their web page: How to help people living rough on the street

If you are concerned about a rough sleeper at any time, please use Streetlink to get in touch with our outreach team. You can also call on 0300 500 0914.
