If you live here, you already know what this weekend looks like from the seafront. On The Beach takes over the pebbles for its final three days, Friday and Sunday are sold out, and Kings Road will be doing what Kings Road does in late July. Saturday still has tickets. Everything below assumes you’d quite like some alternatives.
Friday 24 July
Alive At The Barn opens tonight at The Barn Theatre and runs through Saturday, and it is comfortably the most interesting thing happening away from the water. John Otway & The Big Band, TV Smith, Dakka Skanks, Too Many Crooks and Henry Normal across two days, in a room small enough that you can actually hear people talking between sets. Weekend tickets are the sensible buy.
If you want something louder, Racetraitor are in town tonight — confrontational hardcore, and not a gentle way to start the weekend.
Saturday 25 July
The beach bill is the Radio X day: The Maccabees, Editors, Miles Kane, Anna Calvi, Ash, Badly Drawn Boy and Lime Garden. It’s the only On The Beach date still on general sale, so if you’ve been putting it off, that’s your window.
Elsewhere, SBTRKT plays Concorde 2, which is the pick of the night for anyone who’d rather be indoors and out of the wind. Blue are at CHALK. Volks has Benny Page and Prince Fatty on the outdoor stage, which is the closest thing to a free-feeling seafront night that doesn’t involve a wristband. Anna McLuckie and Junior Brother play The Earthship for something quieter, and Daltons has a long, chaotic all-dayer running into Sunday.
Concorde 2 also hosts the official On The Beach after party with Fish56octagon and K Klass if you’re staying out.
Sunday 26 July
Moby closes the festival on the beach, his first Brighton show in 25 years. Away from that, JFB is back at Volks, Ian Roland plays the Neptune, and The Gladstone has Dog of Man and Shark Stuff — a proper Sunday pub gig, which is the correct way to end a weekend like this one.
Worth booking now
Daniel Kitson brings a work-in-progress to The Old Market in Hove on Monday, and those go fast. Further out, the Brighton Centre has Morrissey and The Muppet Christmas Carol in concert in December, with The Darkness the week after.
