This weekend has a vast variety of activities for you all to take part in; whatever your interests entail, Brighton has you covered. As we shift from Summer to Autumn, there are still outdoor events like the ‘Colour Run’ and shows from ‘The Open Air Theatre’ for us to ensure we take full advantage of the best of the British weather. As Fresher’s approaches, Brighton is busier than ever, with events catered for the partying students as well as those who want a weekend of relaxation.
Macbeth, The Three Inch Fools @ Brighton Open Air Theatre, Friday 20th
Who could think of a better way to kick off your weekend than with the Shakespearean classic, ‘Macbeth’? However, this version of the play is slightly different to the traditional style of performing this tragedy full of transgression and murder. This is a ‘Three Inch Fools’ adaptation of the play, therefore you can expect an array of different folk style musical numbers and the vibrancy that the five fools bring to every performance. Join them in Brighton Open Air Theatre for the 12am or 7pm production and don’t forget to bring your picnic!
A History of the Brighton Workhouses @ The Regency Town House, Friday 20th
If you are interested in Brighton’s history, then this is the talk for you. You may be shocked by the harrowing background of poverty that we are less aware of when thinking of Brighton’s past. But there are hidden narratives surrounding the workhouses located in Brighton waiting to be discovered. The talk will bring to life the voices of Brighton which were less known, giving you a fascinating insight into the workhouse life.
Swingtastic! with the Soultastics @ The Brunswick, Friday 20th
Maybe you would like to start dancing as soon as the weekend has begun, in which case this is the perfect event. ‘Swing Patrol’ will be teaching everyone some amazing lindyhop dance moves before the ‘Soultastics’ kick off with the music. They will be playing swing covers of modern chart music as well as classics from the 30s through to the 50s for everyone to boogie to while ‘Swing Patrol’ takes lead on the dance floor. So travel back in time and dance like no one’s watching to the ‘feel good’ music at The Brunswick on Friday.
The Crafty Dog Festival @ Preston Park, Saturday 21st
Dog lovers all over Brighton will be gathering in Preston Park on Saturday for the charity event which involves dog shows, dog related craft products and much more! You can bring your dogs along for a day you will both enjoy, as they can meet other dogs, join an agility class and the dog show while there are plenty of treats on offer.The charity itself attempts to raise awareness surrounding Aphasia as well as providing support and encouragement for the people who have the condition. So this is an incredible event where everyone can embrace their appreciation for their best canine friends, while supporting a really important charity, such as ‘Say Aphasia’.
The Colour Run @ Madeira Drive, Saturday 21st
You do not have to be an avid fitness lover to attend this unusual 5K race, as the event is made to be fun and bring people together, whether you decide to run it or walk it. You can join the mass of people taking part and morph into a rainbow as you move through the streets. Everyone may turn up wearing white, but they will be transformed with vibrant colours, as people throw powders on you throughout the duration. So, why not brighten up your Saturday and take part in the race where the fun doesn’t stop at the finish line, as all the participants are invited to the massive after party filled with dancing, music and even more colour.
Grease @ Brighton Open Air Theatre, Saturday 21st
Brighton Open Air Theatre will be screening the all time classic, ‘Grease’ on Saturday from 6pm and you’re invited to dress as your favourite characters, while singing along to the well known tunes. For the perfect chilled out evening, with the perfect movie, make sure you bring warm clothes and a blanket with plenty of cinema snacks to last you.
Showlesque @ The Walrus, Sunday 22nd
‘Showlesque’ may not be on your usual agenda for Sunday evening plans, but it’s an amazing way to step out of the ordinary and be dazzled by burlesque, cabaret and circus performers. You are greeted with a complimentary glass of fizz as well as a platter of tasty food to begin your ‘Great Gatsby’ inspired evening. You may feel as though you are in a roaring 20s dream as the surreal performers bewilder you with their talent.
Krater Comedy Club @ Komedia, Sunday 22nd
Maybe you’d like to spend your Sunday filled with laughter, in which case ‘Krater Comedy Club’ is the ideal setting. You are able to enjoy a night of award winning stand up comedy with a delicious meal and drinks at the same time. There will be five different comedians performing their best acts this Sunday from 8pm, so you can definitely top off your week with a smile.
Life Drawing @ New England House, Sunday 22nd
If you are looking for something more peaceful to entertain you on Sunday, then there is a Life Drawing session held in New England House. It is all untutored, so it’s about experimenting with your own techniques on how to represent the forms and proportions of a human body; although if you require advice then there is a friendly session leader you can ask. Drawing materials are provided, so you just need to bring your sketchpad and artistic skills to take part.
