Police have been at the scene of a major accident on the A27 involving a collision with two cars since around 5.30am this morning.
A white Vauxhall Vivaro and red Peugeot 308 crashed in Shoreham at the crossroads with Coombes Road shortly before 05:30 GMT. The accident occurred right by the major Shoreham traffic lights near a Lancing College building (previously Sussex Pad).
The driver of the Peugeot was a 50 year old woman, believed to have been travelling with her 11 year old son. They were both air lifted to hospital after roads were closed to allow the air ambulance to land. It is believed they are both in a critical condition after being cut from their vehicles by the fire and ambulance emergency service.
Also taken to hospital was the 39-year-old male van driver, who only sustained minor injuries.

The A27 has been closed for over 6 hours now, causing a gridlock eastbound and some delays westbound.
Sussex Roads Police took to Twitter to inform drivers that they should expect the eastbound carriageway on the A27 to remain closed until 11am this morning. It is not yet open to the public at 12.30pm. It has been stated that “the road will remain closed for some time” whilst Sussex Police investigate the nature of the accident.
Sgt Richard Hobbs from the Roads Policing Unit Tweeted to say the westbound carriageway had reopened at 7.23am.
Police are urging anyone with a dashboard monitor or camera who may have recorded the crash to come forward with any information on the incident this morning. Information should be reported online or call 101, quoting Operation Fairmile.
