Ah Kemp Town, Brighton’s crown jewel of eccentricity, excitement and colourful characters…If you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting it or even living there, you’ll know it has some distinct traits. So without further ado here’s six things you’ll only know if you live in the city’s cultured quarter.
1. There’s Approximately A Million Coffee Shops
Okay that might be an exaggeration but if you’ve ever visited Kemp Town you’ll know that pretty much every other shop serves coffee. From the lovely Cafe Rococo to the edgy Twin Pines or the quirky My Coffee Story…Java fans will be spoilt for choice down St James Street.
2. Charity Shops Are Also In Abundance
If you like searching for bargains, look no further than the streets of Kemp Town. We’ve pretty much every charity shop under the sun, so happy hunting!
3. There Are Plenty Of Colourful Characters
When walking through Kemp Town you’re more than likely to come across your fair share of interesting characters…Just today I saw a man dancing in the rain whilst performing a rather unique rendition of Girls Aloud’s famous hit, Sound of the Underground. If you’ve lived in Kemp Town, there’s not much that’ll phase you!
4. It Has Some Of The Best Nightlife In Brighton…
Forget about the seafront’s Pryzm or the North Laine’s quaint pubs, Kemp Town is where you ought to go for the nightlife. With Patterns (formerly Audio) playing host to some of the best DJs around the world and pubs galore, it doesn’t get much better than Kemp Town.
5. …And The LGBT Scene Is Bustling…
There’s a reason that Kemp Town is seen as the unofficial gay capital of Brighton. Featuring several gay clubs and drag nights at Priscilla’s (formerly Poison Ivy), St James Street is the place to be if you want a true taste of Brighton’s vibrant LGBTQ+ scene.
6. …And It’s Home To The Best Parks In Brighton
Queen’s Park, Old Steine, New Steine…Kemp Town is home to many of the city’s most luscious green spaces. Whether you’re looking for a spot to settle down and picnic, a space for games or just somewhere to take in the scenery… Kemp Town really does have it all.
