Brighton & Hove Albion produced one of the standout performances of the Premier League’s opening weekend with an emphatic 4–0 victory over Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium, leaving Unai Emery with an immediate rebuilding problem at the start of the new campaign.
The damage was effectively done before half-time. Brighton overwhelmed Villa with their pressing, movement and speed in transition, racing into a commanding lead while the visitors struggled to establish any control of the game. Jack Hinshelwood was at the centre of the performance, scoring twice, while Maxim De Cuyper also found the net. A Victor Lindelöf own goal completed Brighton’s four-goal haul.
Villa’s afternoon deteriorated further when summer signing João Gomes was sent off before the break for violent conduct, reducing Emery’s side to ten men after an already disastrous opening period. Gomes, signed from Wolves, endured a particularly difficult debut and became the first Premier League debutant in years to be dismissed during the first half.
For Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler, the result represented an impressive response to a summer that had brought its own upheaval. The club entered the new season without several established players and was also missing key attacking options, yet Brighton looked organised and confident from the opening minutes.
The result was considerably more troubling for Villa. Only five players who started the club’s Europa League final victory last season were in the starting XI against Brighton following a summer of major departures. Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans have all moved on, while uncertainty also remains around other senior players.
Emery has rebuilt Villa before, guiding the club to a fourth-place Premier League finish and European success despite previous periods of transition. But the scale of Sunday’s defeat underlined just how much work may still be required before the transfer window closes.
For Brighton, meanwhile, it was almost the perfect opening statement: four goals, three points and a performance suggesting that another summer of player turnover has done little to diminish the club’s ability to regenerate.
Villa left the Amex with a very different message.
Their season has started with a warning.
