A number of exciting projects across the seafront are bringing a fresh focus on the next stages of investment and development in Brighton & Hove’s ‘most treasured asset’.

Steve Bassam, The Rt Hon the Lord Bassam of Brighton, will chair a new seafront development board to shape the transformation of our seafront, bringing with him a wealth of experience and ideas.

As a previous leader of the council, a member of the House of Lords and the recent chair of a parliamentary select committee on the Regeneration of Seaside Towns, Steve has the knowledge, experience and understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities of being a city by the sea.

Lord Bassam said: “Few other cities in the world can boast a seafront as recognisable and iconic as ours.

“While the last decade has seen vast improvements to some areas, there are still large parts of the seafront that need to be brought up to their full potential.

“We must create a seafront for all, whilst recognising that we need to protect and enhance the seafront environment. To do this, I want to call on a range of people to help create a ‘public and private’ partnership to help our seafront become even more special.

“I’m delighted to be leading a new seafront board to enable the investment and change we need. To bring a previously run-down seafront back to life with thriving businesses, historic features restored and welcoming public spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy all year round.”

Councillor Jacob Taylor, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Finance and City Regeneration, said: “I’m proud that over the last 18 months we’ve seen big changes to the seafront.

“From the long-awaited start of the restoration of Madeira Terrace to the historic re-opening of the Reading Room and the new boardwalk in the east, to the fantastic new facilities taking shape in the west. Reaching these important milestones makes it a perfect time to involve the community in the wider transformation of the area.

“We all want a seafront we can be proud of, but we can’t bring that vision to life on our own. We need to encourage investment and innovation from across the city and beyond to sensitively transform this special place.

“I’m delighted that Lord Bassam has agreed to take the helm on this bold venture and I’m excited at what we could achieve through his experience and the passion of local organisations and residents who want to see the seafront at it’s very best.”

The board will make strong links with the wider seafront businesses and other developments in the city as well as learn from other seafront towns and cities. They will look not only at the seafront but also the areas and infrastructure around it.

Be part of our seafront’s future

A search will start soon for members to join an independent seafront development board to help shape the vision and encourage interest, investment and improvement in the area.

The board will be looking for a broad representation of residents and businesses that will help drive forward a plan for the seafront that works for all the city’s residents, businesses and the visitors of today and tomorrow.
