A bighearted Brighton tattoo parlour is holding a charity flash day this Saturday (1 April) to raise money for unaccompanied child refugees in France and the South of England.
11 artists at 1770 Tattoos in Little East Street will spend the day tattooing designs which punters can preview on Facebook or Instagram. The designs are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and cost between £50 and £120 each.
All of the money raised will go to The Hummingbird Project, a local charity providing solidarity and aid to refugees in Calais and Dunkirk. It has recently set up a ‘Starling’ division – a group using the arts to help resettled refugee children in Sussex.
This new, specialist service runs a weekly drop-in centre, an art therapy group with HCPC registered art therapists, and offers many other resources to young refugees. It provides practical and psychological support whilst helping young people to connect and reconnect with important social networks.
The group’s projects are entirely crowd funded and receive no core funding. Without donations and fundraisers, it is hard for The Hummingbird Project to pay staff or build and maintain new and existing programs.
The charitable tattoo parlour is also holding an online auction in aid of the charity. It started on Instagram on Saturday 25 March and will finish this Saturday, 1 April – so ink-happy fans still have the chance to bid on amazing lots of tattoo art and merchandise from the UK’s best tattooists!
