Brighton travelled to Old Trafford hoping to build on a solid season so far, but instead found themselves chasing the game almost from the first whistle. Manchester United surged into a commanding lead, with Brighton showing flashes of spark yet too many unforced errors to claw back a more respectable result. The final scoreline — 4-2 to United — hides a performance that simultaneously promised more yet revealed where the Seagulls still must improve.

United struck first in the 24th minute when Matheus Cunha bent a superb shot into the bottom corner, netting his first goal for the club. Just ten minutes later, Casemiro added a second, helped by a hefty deflection that sent the ball past Brighton’s defence and goalkeeper, leaving the visitors stunned. At 2-0 down inside half an hour, Brighton were already on the back foot.

By shortly after the hour mark the match was effectively decided when Bryan Mbeumo scored United’s third, moving into complete control. Brighton did muster a response: former United man Danny Welbeck curled a fine free-kick into the net to pull one back, and a late header from Charalampos Kostoulas made the scoreline more respectable at 3-2. But in stoppage time Mbeumo delivered the killer blow, his second of the game sealing the 4-2 win.

From Brighton’s perspective the game flickered with potential. There were moments of genuine attacking threat, and at times the team pressed with intent, forced turnovers, and got into advanced positions. But the telling factor was the number of avoidable mistakes. The opening goals came via chances created by United, yes — but Brighton’s concession of space and failure to close down key runners such as Cunha and Mbeumo proved costly. Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler admitted as much: “Too many easy mistakes… we had control and good actions, always created danger, but in the end it’s easy mistakes.” Sky Sports+1

The defensive lapses compounded an already uphill task. Once United were 2-0 up the pressure zone tilted heavily in their favour. Brighton’s attempts to respond opened them up at the back, and United exploited it. The late goals illustrate that switch: instead of keeping United at bay, Brighton invited the pressure and paid. The grammar of the win was United pressing with physicality, smarter in the transitional moments, and sharper in finishing. Brighton, by contrast, lacked the defensive cohesion to stay in the game.

On the attacking end, Brighton deserve some credit for showing resilience, especially after Welbeck’s free kick gave them hope. The forward movement was there, particularly in phases. However, the chance-to-goal conversion was lacking, and when the back door was open they couldn’t force United to pay early enough.

From a wider perspective this defeat raises questions about Brighton’s consistency. They have shown the capacity to compete with top sides, but bridging that gap requires tighter discipline, especially in defending transitions and when faced with periods of pressure. Mental toughness becomes key — and against United, Brighton looked a little brittle.

For Manchester United this was a statement of sorts. Their third successive Premier League victory (after earlier wins over Sunderland and Liverpool) pushed them up the table and gained confidence. United coach Rúben Amorim cautioned his squad to remain grounded, despite the win: “We feel we can solve anything … but the urgency must stay.”It shows United are rediscovering their attacking identity, and Brighton had the misfortune of arriving at a side whose sharpness is improving.

In summary: Brighton’s trip to Old Trafford was a mixed bag. On one hand, glimpses of promise; on the other, a tally of mistakes that undermined their effort. If the Seagulls are to make strides this season, performances like these must shift from being “good but flawed” to “good and solid.” The attacking endeavour is there — now the defensive backbone and mindset must follow. United took full advantage, and Brighton must gather themselves quickly.
