Stop the War Brighton and Hove (STWBH) are protesting against Hove MP Peter Kyle’s refusal to call for a Gaza ceasefire in George Street this Saturday.
STWBH want to raise awareness about how Peter Kyle and other British politicians have allegedly enabled Israel to continue its military campaign in Gaza by not calling for an immediate ceasefire.
This protest will start at 2 pm, and people are encouraged to bring placards and banners to participate in the static demonstration.
Manus McGrogan, STWBH organiser, said: “We want Peter Kyle to stop hiding behind the pretence of being neutral on this issue.
“Peter Kyle says he has urged restraint from all sides, but when you look at the details and the letters he has sent to constituents about the issue, he actually defends what he calls ‘Israel’s right to defend itself’.
“This effectively means you can go and do what you want in Gaza. No matter what the consequence is, when it comes to a ceasefire, he’s only called for humanitarian pauses.”
STWBH will also include political theatre in this protest, as some people will be dressed as lawyers and reciting the text of the South African charges brought against Israel for genocide.
Manus McGrogan, said: “These protests are important because they give people in Gaza hope that pressure can be put on Israel from the outside to stop what they are doing.
“They can see the vast majority of people across the world oppose what Israel is doing, want the genocide to end, and support the Palestinian’s struggle for justice.”
STWBH claims that British and US politicians have discussed the possibility of a sustainable ceasefire, but this contrasts with their actions, which include arming and politically supporting Israel during this war.
Peter Kyle, Hove Labour MP, said: “The Labour Party has the same aim as the protesters – we need to get to a sustainable ceasefire as quickly as possible.
“In my view, the route to that is to get back to an agreement like the previous truce deal in November which would allow for a cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages and aid to be brought into Gaza.
“This would also be a step to a political process to achieve a two-state solution that ensures Israelis feel safe and secure from terror and that innocent Palestinians can return home and rebuild their lives, free from bombardment and Hamas control.
“I believe long-term Israeli security and long-term Palestinian justice cannot be delivered by bombs and bullets.
“Open-ended military action without a clear and desired political outcome is ultimately futile. A political agreement is the only way to ultimately resolve this conflict.”
