Brighton are running out of time in their attempts to recruit a new striker for the season, despite their 2-1 win over Burnley over the weekend.
The seagulls still have a large transfer budget following the sale of England international defender Ben White to Arsenal for £50m, with actual goal conversion one of the biggest problems faced last season and in desperate need of resolution.
Neal Maupay is a talented striker whose lack of discipline has been a hinderance over his time at the AMEX, whilst Aaron Connolly is still not at the level needed to make him the first choice for Graham Potter’s men.
Despite this gap, there currently seems to be no real progress in the attempts to strengthen the front line.
Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard has been discussed as a possible target, with the Frenchman lighting up the SPL for many seasons however it is believed that his high wage demands are pricing him out of a move, with Crystal Palace among other now rumoured to be favourites for his signature.
Benfica striker Darwin Nunez has been long considered the main consideration, yet there has been silence despite heavy speculation that seems to evidence a lack of action, with his injury history possibly raising red flags when considering his high transfer fee, which is also said to be much higher than Brighton feel he is worth.
With current targets unaffordable, this may mean that Potter is playing a waiting game to see who may become available in the final two weeks before the transfer window closes.
With costs resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, there is very little free funding for most clubs and therefore there is a need for Brighton to ensure that any moves are fully vetted and affordable before they are made, which could result in a longer than usual time to scout new targets and make actual purchases.
No matter what the situation, the club may be faced with trying to work with the players they have unless something starts to happen soon.
