The Brighton Festival, one of the main events based in the city and able to reach an average audience of 150.000, is about to start its 50th edition. The mixed arts festival, one of the most established festivals in England, will be held from the 7th May to the 29th and is going to feature visual arts, debates, theatre, music and dance, along with many different types of performances and events.
In order to properly celebrate the anniversary, the Clock Tower has been amazingly decorated with a new installation from the Brighton-based artist Bec Britain.
“Fanfare” is a 1960s-inspired work of art; having Brighton Festival come into being in 1967, Bec Britain wanted to celebrate the date where it all began. Characterized by black and white and cut-up pieces of the symbolic “F”, all inspired by the festival logo, the installation is described by the artist as: “big and bold, and in your face – like the Festival itself – a fanfare calling in all directions to the artists of the future” to remind everyone that without the artists, no festival would be possible.
Bec Britain, whose works can be found on her website (www.becbritain.uk), is well-known for large scale sculptures, and has also created an installation for the Rugby World Cup.
Brighton Festival is an event that surely can’t be missed, and which is able to entertain and surprise everyone with a unique and experimental programme; being one of Europe’s leading arts festivals, it aims to enrich and change people’s lives, and to create the distinctive cultural atmosphere that is so typical of the city of Brighton.
