Looking to learn how to fix up your bike to take you through the winter trouble free?

Let’s face it, no one wants to have to sort their chain out on a cold evening. With numb fingers and the shivers doubling up the difficulty of the task, enacting roadside DIY on your bike can be a pain, especially for those of us that don’t really know what we’re doing!

If you are looking to learn a bit more about bike maintenance, and are short on cash, then you’re in luck. Brighton and Hove Council are running free evening classes aimed at getting you cycling safer and training you to deal with any problems you may have with your bike whilst on the move.

Those taking the course must be Brighton & Hove residents of 14 years or above with the courses being subsidised by the Department for Transport’s Access Fund.

Basic Bicycle Maintenance Courses take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Maclaren room at The Level. On this course you will learn how to maintain and look after your bicycle throughout the year. You will learn about the components on your bicycle, how to do a safety check, fix punctures and clean and lubricate important parts.

Intermediate Cycle Maintenance Skills take place on Saturdays from 9.30am to 2.30pm at the Maclaren room at The Level, and will introduce you to using specific tools and lubricants, looking at various brake types and learning  how to make adjustments, changing a brake cable, splitting and re-joining a chain and other required maintenance skills.

In January 2017, the Council were successful in a bid to receive funding from the Access Fund. The Department for Transport is subsidising this initiative to encourage more people to cycle and improve road safety. By providing these subsidised training courses it is hoped that more people will choose cycling as a preferred mode of transport for local journeys.

“Our cycle training providers teach according to the UK’s national standard for cycle training. They have a lot of experience teaching people who have never ridden a bicycle before. There is a maximum of six people per group with two instructors. Our cycle providers will ensure that every one of our trainees will get the required attention to make sure they get the best training possible.”

You can sign up for one of the courses here.
