A 200-year-old pub is to remain open, after being taken over by local brewery Brighton Bier.
The Brighton Bierhaus will be the company’s first pub in the city and is expected to open in early 2017.
The new pub will replace The Jury’s Out on Edward Street which was put on the market earlier this year.
The property has been bought by local developer Copsemill Properties, whole will lease the pub to Brighton Bier.
Originally a regency house, the ground floor was converted to a pub around 1830 as the Thurlow Arms.
Once one of over twenty seven pubs on the street, the Brighton Bierhaus will be one of only two remaining on the road.
Ollie Fisher, Director of Brighton Bier, said “we could not see another pub of such importance close in Brighton and wanted to step in, we just couldn’t see a building with such potential go to waste and a pub with nearly 200-years of heritage be lost”.
Stephen Whitehurst, Director of Brighton Bier, said “we’ve always thought this ‘East Central’ part of the city has a huge amount to offer; the amount of investment and regeneration taking place in the area shows that others think the same.
“We are very pleased to have been able to save the pub for the local community, Brighton as a whole and for the many visitors to our great city. After years of neglect and underinvestment in the fabric of the building we’re having to undertake some necessary renovation to the pub.”
Brighton Bier say that the target date for a planning decision by the Council on some of the changes they hope to make to the building is 9th January.
