King Dethroned as Whitehawk Suffer From Blurred Focus

Whitehawk Football Club parted ways with manager Steve King on Wednesday afternoon, following a poor run of results that saw the south coast club slide out of the promotion mix and down into 13th position. Nine points from 12 games was not enough for King to retain the belief from the club’s board, as the much-travelled non-league coach fell victim to Whitehawk’s poor form following their agonising exit from the FA Cup.

The Hawks are without a league win since losing to Dagenham & Redbridge in the second round FA Cup replay midway through December. Eastbourne Borough ran out 2-1 winners at the Enclosed Ground on Tuesday night, which proved the final straw for King, who was relieved of his duties the following day by mutual consent.

Chairman John Summers was not impressed with Whitehawk’s recent run of form, concluding a spell of five defeats from six games on home ground. The Sussex side opened the campaign with seven wins from 12 league games, however their love affair with the FA Cup noticeably led to one eye being taken off the league, or as Club President Chris Gargan referred to it, the “bread and butter”.

The club fell just short of a money-spinning third round FA Cup tie at Goodison Park and the heartbreak from Whitehawk’s second round failure has evidently transferred into a woeful string of results following the disappointment. A potential trip to face Premier League Everton blurred Whitehawk’s league focus and King, who joined the club just over two years ago, has paid the price for the Hawks’ recent dip in form.

Assistant manager Pablo Asensio has been placed in caretaker charge and is likely to stay put until the end of the season. His first test will be the visit of Havant & Waterlooville this weekend, who currently occupy 20th position in the Vanarama Conference South, followed by the Sussex Senior Cup semi-final against Worthing at Woodside Road.
