Komedia’s flagship children’s event ‘Sundae Club’ has been ensuring that the families who need it most can experience high quality creativity and culture since 2012. We have been inspiring families and showing children the happiness that having creativity as part of your everyday life can bring. We have a commitment to programming and presenting work by a wide range of creatives with an emphasis on BAME and LGBTQ+ artists ensuring as many children as possible can see themselves reflected in the club. Thanks to an emergency grant from Arts Council England we have been able to take the ‘Sundae Club’ online.
The events run on the Komedia Kids YouTube channel from 11.30am on 5th July, 2nd August, 6th September and 4th October. It’s an online extravaganza with just under 2 hours of fun for children aged 3-9 and their families. Our host Robin Hatcher from The Noise Next Door will keep you entertained whilst introducing acts* such as musical comedian Jay Foreman, Ugg ‘n’ Ogg will be swinging by to show you some of the things these hunter gatherers invented 10,000 years ago, an interactive creative workshop from Saj of Pull & Pin, brilliant animation brought to you by One Bum Cinema, a show each month from the likes of puppet theatre company Long Nose Puppets and music from our house band The Swing Ninja’s.
The at-home version of the club will keep the idea of live shows alive in young children’s minds ensuring there are eager audiences for live kid’s shows like the Sundae Club once social restrictions are eased. Taking the club on-line will open new audiences – without physical or financial barriers it will reach even further into the communities who don’t access the culture on their doorstep.
The shows will be a shared experience for families arranging to watch at the same time as friends and sharing thoughts and making online in private or via Komedia’s social media. The digital format is an opportunity to collect feedback starting a conversation about how the live clubs could be more accessible.
General Manager of Komedia Paul Musselwhite says ‘Nothing beats having shows in the venue, this funding has allowed us not only to create content that represents the excellent shows we put on normally, it will remind the public that Komedia is still here and more importantly we can use this opportunity to reach out to some communities who may not of been able to come to the venue in the past.’
We hope this will give us the opportunity to reach out to more families and attract a wider audience when we do return.
